My BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art, in Boston, MA was in Design with a concentration in Illustration. I prefer to work primarily in traditional media (pencil, pen and ink, marker and acrylic paint), but I also enjoy using digital media (Photoshop and Illustrator) when the subject matter or style calls for it. The subjects that interest me most contain historical or literary characters, especially those associated with New England, as well as fantastical or humorous elements. I like to tell stories with my illustrations. My working methods are traditional as well. I start with a thumbnail, work that into a more finished sketch, and frequently work up a color study in marker before going to paint. Sometimes the color study becomes the finished piece. I enjoy shooting my own photo reference when possible, and have access to a large number of costumes and props as well as friends who like to model. I'm always looking for new opportunities to utilize my illustration skills more fully. George Courage Illustrator |
